I recently came across a link to a domain name written as http:companyname.8k.com
Does anyone know what it is as far as the .8k part? Thanks

it is a subdomain, just like mail.yahoo.com is a subdomain of yahoo.com.

I believe that 8k is a free webhosting service, similar to tripod or geocities.

Just for clarification's sake, "companyname" is a subdomain and "8k" is the actual domain name.

I remember, back in the day, I actually hosted my first site there. Nostalgia.

Hiya guys...

To clarify, subdomains of 8k.com (and other domains) are offered with free (and i presume paid for hosting) from Freeservers.

Cheers

My first website, which has become wildly succesful, is under a "subdomain.freehost.com" domain name.

I am paying for hosting so that there are no popups.

Are there any disadvantages to having such a domain domain name, regarding position in the SERPs?

Would it be worth the risk for me to get my own domain name?
