I have a few domains around. Most are registered with one Registrar, and that is fine. However, recently, I have bought two new domains (one that deleted, paid a service to grab it, and bought one from another individual), and they are both with other registrars.
One of these two new domain registrars looks prett good to me. My current registrar is a bit tough to log in and manage things- this new one is a breeze. Also, the price of renewal at the new registrar is very attractive, in the 7-9 bucks a year depending on term.
So, I think I would like to transfer all to this new one. But I have questions...
1) Is it s good idea to have all your eggs in one basket so to speak?
2) If transfer, do I loose the time I have already paid for- some do not expire until 2013, and I would hate to loose that.
3) Is there a fee to do this, from either registrar (usually)?
I would also love to know what you all think of the registrar I think is so good... is it within the TOS for me to ask about a specific company?
Thanks!
Dave
Usually, you pay for a year's registration with the new registrar, and the transfer is free. You get the year added on to the existing expiry date, so you don't lose out. The receiving registrar will guide you through the process, although sometimes you have to get a release code or confirmation from the registrar you are leaving.

When you transfer a domain between registrars, you normally pay the new registrar for a one-year registration, and one year is added to the life of the domain (you don't lose the existing years).
There's normally no fee from the old registrar, although check that as a few dodgy ones might try to impose a fee, and many of them will do everything possible to delay and thwart the transfer. You also can't transfer within the first 60 days of buying a domain.
The OLD company is very reputable, so I doubt I will have a problem there. The new company SEEMS reputable, but there is just something that seems a bit weird...
There is a domain registrar I see mentioned here a lot, known for being very inexpensive. This company is that company's sister. (Actually, it is a couple cents cheaper than the better known version everyone here seems to use)
Anyway, the dodgy thing to me is this: I did not find the company directly. I "whois'ed" a domain I wanted, and this company was at the end of a link to back order the domain. As the domain just expired, I used them to BO it... and then they became the registrar. Like I said, I loved the management interface...
Let's say the company is bo-registrar.com (it isn't, just in case that is a real company). To do anything on their site, I am using a url like [othercompanyname.com......] and that name is not associated with any other company! So that seems a bit weird. If I go to [bo-registrar.com,...] I see a company info page, and deals on having them host my site, etc, but not the domain manager- that is at othercompany.com.
Am I paranoid?
