They currently have a domain our client would like setup with one of those useless directories/search engines. The stuff they have on the page has nothing to do with the domain, they’re just using it to get useless type in traffic. However, it’s pretty clearly stated on their webpage that they don’t sell domains.
Has anybody had a similar situation? Is there anything that can be done or is this just a case of useless crap holding back progress on the internet?
You can try sending an email with the domain name and an offer amount in the subject line. In the body, get right to the point. Make an offer and stick to it.
If your offer is not interesting you will almost certainly *not* receive a response. Don't take it as rude - they get a lot of offers to sell and most of the offers are low-ball. Low-ball offers often come from people with little experience who feel they know the true value of the name and are offended when their offer is refused. They then become belligerent so it is just a waste of their time to respond.
