Use email from same Domain as "owner"?

Hello everyone. I've been a lurker for a long time but this is my first post here.

I'm looking for a little advice. Let's say I registered some-domain.com, and I used [e-mail] as the email address for the contact information (owner) with the registrar. Is this a wholly foolish idea? I was kind of thinking, it seems bad to use an email as authentication from the some domain that you need to authenticate.

I've seen this done alot in whois listings, but.... seems kind of counterintuitive to me.

You are correct. The e-mail should not be on the domain.

imagine this ...your site is down ..you need to change hosts ..you forget your "zone password"...you click "forgot" your password ...the registrar tries to send the info to an email on a site which is down ....

Never ever do this ...it's like shooting yourself in the foot with an unknown time delay before the wound happens and you feel the pain!

I'd also recommend that not only the e-mail be off the domain, but also that it be one that you can be *absolutely* sure will always be available to you. ISP e-mails tend to be bad in that if you decide that your ISP sucks and get another, you then have to change the contacts with your registrar. What if you forget to do so? Curiously, this means that something like a Hotmail or Yahoo mail account is near ideal. Pretty safe bet that MS or Yahoo won't go bankrupt soon.

I've switched them to gmail, given the amount of spam an address listed in whois can attract. Have had situations where email did not get through to hotmail because of spam overload.
