hi there,

It may sound stupid to you, however I don`t know the details of transfering a domain name to someone else.

A few months ago I bought a domain name on behalf of a friend of mine. I used his credit card information. That`s why his name and contact information are in the whois directory.

I`m starting up a business in a short time and I will use this domain for my business. What should we do in order to see this domain under my name (or my business name) in the whois directory?

Do we only need to change the information about the owner in question or is there anything else that we should do?

Thank you in advance.

There are a couple things you can do - the easiest, perhaps is to initiate an ownership transfer within the same registrar.

The place where you registered the domain should have an option for doing that.

Other than that, you could transfer the domain to another registrar, and just put your info in as the new owner.

...which means I will only change the info about the owner of the domain such as name, address, and phone number etc? Am I correct?

Thank you so much for your help!

The owner of the domain listed in the whois info is the legal owner of the domain. If you update this to your info then you will be the legal owner of the domain.

However, if your friend has the login info to the place where you registered the domain then he could potentially login and change the information back. Becuase of this, you should either update the username/password at the site where you registered the domain or set up a new account and have them transfer or 'push' the domain into your account.

Where is the domain registered right now?

What type of domain is the one in question? .com, .co.uk, etc?

Guys,

Thank you for your help. We bought it from Godaddy. It`s a .com domain name.

After your suggestions, first, I`ll transfer it to another register then I`ll change the username/password and owner information.

I know that I don`t have to change the register company, but I believe there are some better companies out there.

Thanks again.
