Backordering?

I just stumbled across a service offering backordering of domains. I pay a fee NOW, and they try to register the domain I want when it will be available next (usually when it expires or gets deleted).

Does that actually work? Or will I never see my money again?

Depends who you're dealing with, which reminds me I put some cash down with one of these companies a couple of years back, if I could just remember which one............

Mentioning names here is probably against the rules. The domain I'm after is the ".com" equivalent to my country-specific domain. The whois record says it's due to expire in 2006, but it's with the same company since the early 90ies...
