Expiration dates are off

Whois at registrar shows very different date than Internic

I have run across two domain names for which the expiration dates reported by the registrar's whois and by Internic's whois do not match. In both cases, Internic reports an expiration of about 1 year later than the registrar.

For one domain, Internic shows a record update occurred early last week. I guess there could be a long delay in what shows on the registrar's whois, but this seems like an unusual amount of time.

I was going to wait for another week or two before checking into it more. But then I ran into... the second domain, which is totally amiss. According to both sources, the last update occurred in February of 2003. But Internic's expiration date is again almost a full year off from the one shown by the registrar.

Is this common? Can anyone know which is the correct date?

And yes, the registrar is Network Solutions.
