At lunch today a friend of mine offhandedly told me he had a (real english word).com domain name that he has never used. Didnt even think much of it.

I'm not gonna say the domain name itself, but I can tell you some things:

1. Its not a "Great" word... ie... inspiration or love or anything.

2. Its a verb.

3. Its in every english dictionary

4. Its less than 7 letters long

5. I cant really think of a commerical purpose for the word (like running dot com or searching dot com)

How much would something like this be worth?

Everything depends on the word. A noun is worth a lot more though.

a quick look at greatdomains.com may give you clues to current semi-realistic values.

whatever someone is willing to pay for it.

1. type in traffic, if any can be monetized...figure out what they're looking for.

2. put it up on a parking page with a for sale link and see if you get any offers. that'll tell you if it has much value.

3. post this question on a domain name forum website, many do free appraisals.

Thanks all...

and before my mailbox gets flooded with people asking what the domain name is:

I need to get in touch with my friend again to see what he wants to do with it before I start making public what the domain name actually is... so dont ask.

GreatDomains.com is not even semi-realistic most of the time, it's pie in the sky high hopes from people hoping to strike it rich.

If it's a verb for which you can't think of a use, it probably doesn't have much value at all. I've seen one word .com verbs go for as little as $15 up to maybe a couple hundred if it's somewhat snazzy, higher for really good ones. Really depends upon the word. It's also possible there may be a use you just don't think of that someone else would. And if it gets good traffic from people typing it in out of curiosity it'll have more value than not.

Just curious, did you get people wanting to know the domain? :-)
