Transferring a domain name

A client of mine has a .com domain name. The name is registered to his ex-business partner. His ex-partner is happy for him to take ownership of the domain name.

The domain is currently hosted in Germany and the name is up for renewal in a month or two. How should I ensure that my client gets ownership of the domain name. Would it be better to change domain owner now or back order the domain?

If I change ownership, can I register it now for another x years?

Any help and advice much appreciated.

First make sure the contact addresses in the whois information is correct. Then initaite a transfer request of that domain with a domain register. They will then act on your behalf to have that name transferred to you.As long as the current owner is agreeable to it, as you say, then there should be no trouble. As long as there is greater than 30 days left to expiry date,If not ask the owner to renew the domain first.
An alternative is to open up an account with the register that is holding the domain and have the owner push it over to your account. Most registrars have that facility.

Cheers. Unfortunately I have a couple of problems. Firstly, the domain is registered in Germany and for starters my German ist zehr bad. Secondly the domain is due for renewal in 20 days.

Given that time is running out for renewal, renew NOW!

Transfering a domain, even between co-owners takes some time and (if I remember correctly) may lock the account during until the transfer is finalized.

You shouldnt have to transfer at all ..simply have the ex partner log in to where ever the name is registered at and change the contact information INCLUDING email to your client (replace ex partner info with your client)..

expartner sends the login info..
your client logs in and has control to do whatever he likes .. first of which is to register it for another year ..then if he wants to stil transfer to anothe rregister he can initiate the transfer himself whenever he wants.
