I'm considering hosting my doorway pages on a subdomain of my main site, is there any advantage in doing this over hosting them on another domain, in terms of link popularity?

It is my understanding that subs are treated the same as regular domains. I have taken keywords and split them off onto subs and done fairly well with them. I "think" with themes if your root page is the "authority" on the keyword then sub domains are a smart way to acheive better rankings. Don't forget to hyphenate your words in the dns(i-like-google.yomama.com). I "think" if you have "unique" content enough on your sub domains you might be able to get them into the ODP as well...that will really help...perhaps Laisha or Brett might help me on this :)
