Hi,

To prevent others from knowing WHO the owner of the domain is (by doing a simple whois), is it safe to put bogus information? I think I read somewhere that its illegal?

Please explain.

The biggest problem with this idea is that it could cause serious problems if you ever wanted to sell the domain name. As for legality, that might depend on where you live. As a practical matter, I'd think it all kinds of unlikely anyone would go to jail for this in most places.

There are no dramas as long as your technical and administrative contact email addresses are current and correct. If not then your register is required to delete the name after about 15 days if they receive a complaint.

Most registrars offer a "private" registration. I think that hides most of the contact info from a whois search.
