Lets say I have a company called Superior Blue Widgets. Well that's a long name, so I use the domain name superiorblue.com. However, my company name Superior Blue Widgets appears on the web site, on brochures, etc.

Is it advisable to also purchase superiorbluewidgets.com just for type-in traffic and redirect it to superiorblue.com? Will that hurt my ranking in any way?

Thanks!

Make sure to set up those redirected domains (type-in traffic) using a 301 permanent redirect to www.superiorblue.com/.

It's also a good idea to pick up the other TLDs such as .INFO, .NET, .BIZ and so on if available. If your name is easily or commonly misspelled, pick up the misspelled name and it's a really good idea to pick up the name with "sucks" on the end as in widgetssucks.com. This will get a few type-ins and, more importantly, prevent some competitor from getting some of your traffic. With domain names so cheap, it's just a good idea to grab the most important ones and redirect to the main site.
