Irish .ie cctld To Be Regulated By Irish Government

The Irish government is to regulate the .ie cctld and the registrar that currently administers the Irish (.ie) cctld. The reason for this move is that the current registry has made a complete mess of running the .ie cctld. The running of .ie cctld will be regulated from next year.

The Irish internet industry has no confidence in the competence of IEDR. More Irish owned .com/net/org/info than .ie domains exist. The .ie domain is one one of the most expensive in the world and the conditions of acquiring one are hidebound and complex. Whether this will mean a cheaper and more open cctld for the Irish is open to question - some want the administration of .ie cctld to be taken over by a competent and properly run registry.

ComReg is supposed to take over the regulation of .ie and IEDR in February from what I have heard. The Irish hosting industry is currently agreeing a set of terms for .ie domain registrations and part of this will be a reduced registration fee. As IEDR is currently facing court action by at least one Irish hosting company, there are already talks about having .ie administration removed compeletely from IEDR. Doing this may take some time, but I don't think that there is anyone in the Irish hosting business who expects IEDR to be around this time next year.
