I think so. I redirect all my visitors to domain.com [301] instead of www.domain.com. Non-techy consumers, I think, expect the www part to be there. In any event, your domain should be reachable as www.domain.com or domain.com.

WWW was never needed. Was just a unixy convention.

NO. A lot of non-alpha-numeric characters are used in programming, regular expressions. It would many programs would have to be re-written to accomodate for these new domain names.
