A good domain name to be released today

Lots of people watching this one... what's best chance to secure it?

There is a domain name that is supposed to be released today that I would really like to register.

The reason for the urgency is, I know there are other people watching and waiting to register it as soon as it becomes available.

And I'm not sure if you guys are familiar with "SnapNames" but it's a service that tries to register domains as soon as they become available, and someone has orderered the snapname for this domain, so I'm up against some tough competition here! :)

So I was wondering if you guys have any tips for the best way to try to register the domain before anyone else, WITHOUT using a SnapNames type service... In other words, doing it the "old fashioned way"... by checking the domain whois every few minutes or so, all day.

Are there some things I should know? Like, is there a certain domain whois record site that updates faster or anything?

Or does anyone have any tips?

What I meant by "is there a domain whois record that updates faster" is that the one I'm using to check shows:

>>> Last update of whois database: Sat, 11 Oct 2003 18:12:49 EDT <<<

Which was about 8 hours ago.

Does that mean the domain could be available now, but they just haven't updated it?

Like is a certain domain registration site known for being the fastest at letting you register domains that are dropped and released or anything?

How to snag a "Pending Delete" [webmasterworld.com] has a lot of information.

Thanks Jenstar, a good thread...

Found out that chances are pretty slim if there is allready a snap on a domain at snapname, and you plan to do it the old fashioned way... and that it will be released at 2:00 PM EST today. So I will try at that time for fun anyways. :)

Cheers

Hey, I overslept a bit to try and register it this morning, but the whois still shows PENDINGDELETE, but now the snap on the name has been removed...

Does this mean someone else got it, but the whois record just hasn't been updated? Or is it still really pending delete?

I hate to be the barer of bad news but, quiet simply, you had no chance "at all" at ever getting the name before snapname did and "yes" if the snapname is off them someone got it already. For the future, if you want a expiring domain, use snap or one of the other sources (if the domain will be in demand) that is.

Hi teeceo, ya! Turns out I lost it to a competitor! Learned my lesson this time and will be more on the ball next time if I really want a domain...

Learned you can't do it the "old fashioned way" and try to register it manually and expect to get it if someone has the Snap on it.

Someone allready had the snapname on it this time, but I could have tried NameWinner or Pool still and may have had a chance.

Oh well, lesson learned!
