Hi, I just noticed this privacy service from Go Daddy. I was wondering if your WHOIS info goes hiding, is it illegal?

I know putting in spoof info can have your names locked and eventually deleted if you don't correct the info.

I'm curious as to how proxy services work as well. Do they officially own the name and you control it?

I can't see it being illegal; at least not in the UK; I am certain that there is no legislation covering this.

However, not illegal is not the same as "against terms and conditions" - which it may very well be.

Even if the top level registry has a policy that whois information must be accurate; this does not stop a company like GoDaddy simply "owning" the domain on your behalf for the purposes of providing their anonymity service.

Oh, that answers the question... GoDaddy simply replaces my WHOIS with its general info. Not very useful service I would say.
