How safe are our domain names?

Afraid someone might steal domains...

Do you guys know how safe our domain names are? I'm under the impression that someone could easily steal a domain from someone else simply via fax or hacking into our emails to retrieve password.

Also, do you know the MOST secure domain registration company on the Internet?

What procedures do I have to take to safeguard my domain? Should I not use the email address from the same domain name as my website for domain registration?

Thanks for answering my questions...

Don't use network solutions, they are hijack central. Always have your domain renewed way in advance. Don't use a free e-mail place like Yahoo or Hotmail (easy hijacking) as your e-mail on the domain.

Most registrars also have a option to put a "Lock" status on a domain name, I recommend doing that too.

thewebboy,

what do you mean by 'hijack central?' Is network solutions the prime target for domain hijack? Also, how do people hijack domains anyway?

How do I 'lock' my domain name at Network Solutions?

Regarding admin email: It's a good idea to use an email address on a *different* domain for the contact info.

Sad story: I once used info@thesamedomain.com for the admin contact and managed to lose the password. When there were hosting problems I couldn't get in to change the DNS info or update anything else, because the registrar would only send password info to the admin address ... which wasn't working because of the hosting problems. I couldn't get any help from the registrar, and eventually lost the domain because I couldn't get in to renew it either. I don't remember which registrar it was, just that they were based in Europe.
