I can't move this domain name!

Hello,

I have a large problem. I have a domain name that really needs to be moved by changnig the nameservers.

I don't know what registrar the original owner bought it through, but I do have the username and password.

I am prohibited in moving it as of now according to the whois information, which says: "Status:CLIENT TRANSFER PROHIBITED". I've tried moving it but it doesn't work, because of this I'm suspecting, and also because I don't know who they bought it through.

I'm assuming the person with the ability to change this would be the tech contact, all the other contacts are of my client, the one who wants the name moved and doesn't have any other info for me.

We can't contact the tech person, it's almost as if he doesn't exist, his company is gone, his location can't be found.

Is there some other way to move this name? This isn't funny.

I found your post a bit confusing animgirl
If you have a username and password then I assume its to the registrar.
It seems you have accessed it and was unable to transfer the name.If you do have the password you should be able to change the technical contact to your own and then instigate a transfer.
There are also other reasons why a registrar will prohibit transfer including being close to expiring.

Well, I can't find out the registrar. That's one of the problems. When I look at the whois, it doesn't tell me who the registrar is.

And, when I try to transfer the domain name to the registrar I use, It won't let me.

If you can track the registrar, usually a fax with proof of ID is sufficient to have them manually modify the info. The registrar will be able to tell you the exact details.

If it is registered with NetworkSolutions, a hand letter message on a crumpled cocktail napkin is fine. ;)

The .biz, .info, .us and .name TLDs use a status code of CLIENT_TRANSFER_PROHIBITED to indicate the registrar has locked the domain to prevent its transfer to another registrar. You should not need the tech contact to do anything, and it does not matter which registrar the original owner bought it through (it could have transferred through numerous registrars since the original purchase). You already have enough information to deal with the current registrar, and you should have the ability to alter the nameservers with them. If you still cannot find the current registrar, send me a sticky mail with just the domain name, and I will see what I can figure out for you. ;)

AHA! It's good to know what Client_Transfer_prohibited means. *whew* :)

I think we're close. I contacted the company the owner bought it through, now the owner just has to talk to them to get the pass.
