I know I can renew a domain I already have before it expires, but can other people purchase my domain for the next year before it has expired, or can they only purchase it once it has expired?

Thanks for any help.

Are you asking if you can sell a domian that you have registered? If so you can transfer the domain. Noone can register your domain unless you permit it. You will always have first dibs on future renewal. I believe most registrars give you 90 days after it expires to give you a chance to renew. After that then people can register it. Snapnames and expirefish can only get these names after they have expired and been through the waiting period.

Hi, thanks for the advice.

I was interested to know if anyone other than me could register my domain before it has expired. I didn't think it was possible, just wanted some reassurance.

Thanks for the help.

It is usually held for about 35 to 40 days after expiry date before it can be resold.

As long as the domain record is in your name - regardless of whether it's expired or not - nobody else can sneak in and purchase it from under you.

Should another party be interested in the domain though, they can use the likes of Expirefish, SnapNames or one of the many similar companies who offer a domain 'backordering' service. If you're not familiar with this, these companies continually check to see if the domain has been made available for sale following expiry and try to purchase it if it's available.

If you were familiar with that bit then I apologise!

To go back to the original question though, your domain can only be purchased after it has expired and has been made available for sale again.

Yeah I've heard of companies like expirefish. That shouldn't be a problem, I always renew the domain before it has expired.

Thanks
