I am thinking of purchasing a .us domain name for use in the search engines (none of the other endings are available for the domain name I want).

Are there any disadvantages for a .us domain name in the search engines?

As a rule, no particular advantages or disadvantages. Some search engines that do regional filtering based upon the domain type might exclude your .US domain from their regional results though.
