I'm working at an ISP and we have to re-number our IP addresses which means that all the people who are hosting with us have to update their DNS records. At least I think that's what they have to do.

1) Is that a wrong assumption?
2) Is there some sort of way to make mass updates to various domains on various registrars?

Well, if you control the DNS servers then you should not have a problem globally changing dns records and their IP addresses inside your DNS servers. If however your clients have their own DNS servers you will need to inform them to change their own records since you can effect the insides of other peoples's DNS servers.

If you are making a change to your DNS servers, like switching host names. You can make a global change at Verisign-GRS that will effect all people that list your name server for their domain. But not many people are big enough to work directly with the registry for this type of change. I have done this before but that is when I worked for a hosting company that had over 200k clients.
