I tried doing a search on this one as I feel certain it must have been covered, but to no avail.

How does a .net compare in the engines and www marketplace as a whole to a com or co.uk. I am not thinking so much of the association of region but more the placement and perception.

Are there any serious .net's out there to put my mind at rest. Just in case you have not guessed I have particular net and a less pleasing co.uk and I am wondering if my choice will affect my traffic/rank.

Cheers

If you get the the .com you can do well with a .net. The problem is people type in .com first. If someone else has that site you will lose traffic. Depends really on how you brand it.

Very difficult to compete with .com. The vast majority of people will go to a .com first, even if they've seen your site as a .net, many will forget and use .com. Also, many users type in just the domain name in Internet Explorer (vast majority of web surfers use IE) and CTRL+click - works for .com's.

If you successfully brand a site with .net, you may be OK, but it can be very expensive. If you go with a .net and your domain has an equal or similar sounding/looking .com, good luck.
