I have a client whos domain expired yesterday, taking the site down.

The registrar is in germany, it was done via **2 - and he has had a lot of problems with them, was not sent any renewals and would like me to sort out the registration & hosting.

When I check on **2's site it says :

Status: REDEMPTIONPERIOD
Updated Date: 17-mar-2003
Creation Date: 17-mar-2002
Expiration Date: 17-mar-2003

Can anyone advise me the best way to get it up and running quickly, regardless of costs.

Thanks.

The current service provider should offer you a grace period for renewal yeah or no? if it is the case then you can renew for another year followed by a transfer to another provider which has better customer support.

I had the same problem on a site recently (also with a German registrar) you have to get on at them regularly until they actually get round to sorting out the problem.

From the time the status changes to "redemption period" you should have around 30 days to renew the domain at the registrar, which will probably be Joker if the domain was registered at UK2 (judging from what you've said!)

The renewal will not be cheap however - I paid $150 (USD) plus the normal renewal fee last time round where Bulkregister were the Registrar.

Other than this, there isn't much you can do - you can't transfer the domain to another Registrer because it has already expired, a normal renewal isn't possible and if you wait for the domain name to drop, you may find that somebody else purchases it before you can.

TLDs registered through UK2 tend to have the owner set as the admin contact and at the least, you'll be able to recover your user details from Joker directly (not from UK2) and log in.

Get in touch with the Registrar sooner rather than later, explaining that you'd like to renew the domain and requesting a price. German legislation means that there may be some bits of paperwork to complete but this shouldn't be an issue.

Sticky me if I can be of help at all with this one - we're frequent Joker callers!

<update>If it is with Joker, take a butchers' the news articles on their home page which deal with the Redemption Period issue - price is given at 225 Euros.</update>
