Nominet are now releasing detagged domain names at a considerably increased rate. They are running huge drop scripts every couple of days and some amazing names are being released that had been sitting there in detagged status for up to 3 years. There are some great domains to be had!

Does anyone have any advice or recommendations on how best to acquire a detagged domain?

I have my eyes on a particular .co.uk for a client - no big deal if we can't get it, but it would be nice. It is currently detagged. Don't really want to go direct to the current registrant as it would probably (?) push the price up. Like I say, it would be nice to have at some time in the future but there is no rush.

So the question is whether anyone has experience of those 'back order this domain' services for .uk domains? And if so, any recommendations on which one to use? Or is there another way?

Anyone know an easy way to search for detagged .uk domains?

Never approach the former registrant. They always get greedy and start talking telephone numbers for the name that they were so willing to let go for nothing before you came along. The best advice is to use one of the specialist monitoring services that have sprung up. Only use a service that is willing to quote previous catches. There are several services that have sprung up in the past two weeks that have never actually caught anything and just make vague quotes about "many successful catches".

As for finding detagged domain names, that is the 64,000 dollar question! Many people have different methods. There are several different software packages that will let you run dictionary word lists against Nominet's whois server. Be warned though that Nominet impose a very strict limit of 1 enquiry per second otherwise they will block your IP address or even netblock in some cases. Use the config settings to slow down the queries to < 1 per second anf then everyone is kept happy.

thanks CHC. Of course, I should have just checked your profile instead of googling around for the last 10mins!
