Connection Speed and cloaking

We have a 30% bounce rate (1-page view) on our site. I suspect the bulk of this is becuase of slow download speed and we are redesigning the whole site using webstandards, CSS positioning etc.

However even at a reduced page weight it would be good to use a connection speed detection tool (Browserhawk is one) and serve smaller images to dial-up users e.g. "if connection is speed is less than 50K, use main_image1 (10K filesize) , if conncetion speed is >50K use image2".

I have read various threads on this forums regardig Browserhawk, for ex:

[webmasterworld.com...]
[webmasterworld.com...]

and people's reservations seem to refer to delivering a different page depending on connection speed. I would simply want to display a high or low res image depending on the connection. Would this get me into trouble?

Serving up different images based on connection speed shouldn't be a problem as far as gettin a site banned for cloaking is concerned.
