the 1st thing to ask is WHY?

although NOT a techy, I know 1 thing, and that is that you really need a Secure Certificate such as Thawte or Verisign on your server.

but the reason WHY would help get a suitable reply

Well i read that i would need a certificate from Verisign or thawte, but after taking the certificate how does it works, do i have to do some changes in my website ( i.e http ) so that it can work according to https.
how will taking the certificate change my http to https?
thanks

You or Your host needs to install the certificate on the server.

Once that is done you can correctly use the https method.

I am sure a fellow techy will be along any minute to put both of in the correct picture, because at the moment and excuse the expression:

Do you really need to secure the entire site? Or just a page?

1)i would like to secure all the pages where the transactions are done. So is it possible to secure few pages instead of all.

Most sites just secure the ordering form/cart.

Many hosts sell certificates, and will install the cert for you. Really all you may have to do is fill out some paperwork and re-link your pages to account for the https://

Depending on your host they may have a wildcard SSL certificate that you can use. This would save you the hassle of having to obtain your own.

The only drawback to this is that the URL for your secure pages will be something like [yourdomain.yourhost.com...]

If you need your own certificate you will need to find out who you are obtaining the SSL cert from first. They will have instructions for you to follow that are very important. If you screw up somewhere along the way they aren't very forgiving in regards to issuing you a new certificate.

You will have to have you hosting company generate the first part of the certificate which you will submit to the certificate issuing company. They will then send you the code to submit back to your host in order to make your site secure.

Once the certifcate is installed you don't have to duplicate your site. The entire site should be secure by default. The only difference is the "s" you place after the http in the URL.
