Hardware for web server

I'm looking to build a computer to function as a business web server. Do I absolutely need to buy "server" components (server motherboard, ECC RAM, etc.)?

For instance, if I just put together a server using a regular motherboard and RAM and other components, what kind of load could it handle? Enough for a small business?

Also, is there software available that will simulate high load on a server for testing purposes?

I think that depends on your uptime requirement more than anything else these days. Most desktop based machines are actually more than up to the job speed wise. Just make sure you go for fast (ish) hard drive and RAM.

What you'll lose is the ability to hot-swap components/power supply redundancy etc.

If you can get two cheaper PC's and have one running as a backup, I would say that route is fine.

Don't skimp on the power supplies though.
