information on setting up a merchant account

Is there any information on the steps needed to secure a merchant account in general, not with a company in particular? Any tips would be greatly appreciated

I am a Costco member and got my merchant services through Costco/Iongate/Nova systems. So far no problems for last 12 months. The paperwork was very easy and setting it up was easy too. I did some checking before using costco and feel like we saved some $$ on discount levels, and setup fees. Good luck.
