I'm a web designer and over the last two years have got to grips with SEO/M. A client has recently had a site built but does not want to sell over the net and has suggested I might like to sell their products. Thing is how can you tell if a product actually sells over the web? There are lots of competing sites, but I dont know if they are making any money. Any advise appreciated.

You may be aware of them already, but many find a couple of tools over at Overture to be helpful. You might try the term suggestion tool and view bids tool at:

[content.overture.com...]

Get an idea whether your potential product has interest on the net and if other webmasters are bidding to be found by appropriate keywords. For example, if 54,000 searches are performed a month for a certain keyword and the top three bids are $1.14, 1.12, and .98, your product may have decent demand and good conversion.

This is a quote from Actinic

The internet is particularly good for selling
- 'Hard goods'
- Products priced in a consistent way
- Products for which there is a fixed price list
- Products with a short sales cycle
- Products that can be chosen by sight or sound
- Repeat purchases

The internet is less effective for selling
- Services for which the prices are individually negotiated
- Products with a long sales cycle
