Hi,

One of my prospective customers wants an ecommerce site to sell around 250 products. I use to use Actinic but want to try something else (build my custom script or manage an existing one)

Here is what I think is needed can you tell me if I miss something important!

  • front end:
    - shopping basket/cart
    - purchase/checkout form based on the basket content

  • back end
    - secure server with certificates (he's going for the merchant account)
    - product management section

    Do you think that
    a) he might need a search facility?
    b) I should build something myself in ASP (only language I am confident enough to script in) or go for a ready made script
    c) did I forgot something major?

    Thanks for your help

    Leo:

Yes, include search and multiple levels of categories for products a must - 250 is too many to browse through...

Other features: really depends on the client and his business. These might include the ability to do coupons, or offer other discounts (like bulk discounts, or buy x get x), put items on sale, to show related products. Stats from the store in addition to the log files - showing popular products, which items are selling, etc. An admin interface that let's them view orders, products, etc.

As to whether to write it yourself: only you can answer that one - how much coding from scratch have you done in the past and is it cost effective for you to do it? In my case, it's simpler, faster and more cost effective to work with one of several shopping cart programs - my favorite is a cart written in Perl (which I love because it is extremely customizable both function wise and look and feel wise)

    Just my thoughts.
