Hi,

I am trying to decide between the two, which is best choice for a small biz in the UK, trading in the EU. In full swing there will be max 50 transactions a year around £500-£1500 each.

I dont think there will many (if any) transactions for the first few of months, but want the facility up an running anyway.

I have looked at others like protx etc, but narrowed it down to these two - at least for the first year or so.

WP is £75 setup, £150 p/a recurring
4.5% or 50p per transaction. +6p for anti fraud.
35p per setlement

Paypal is free set up and no annual costs.
3.4% + 20p per transaction.

Paypal is better on fees, but then there are issues like customers having to signup and being charged fees that WP doesnt have - this causes me a little concern.

Are there any other fees costs are involved that I have overlooked? Or any other issues

Wich do you think is the better choice Worldpay or Paypal?

Thanks.

I have a WorldPay account and PayPal. I let the user choose how they want to pay, after all PayPal is free unless someone uses it ;). About 95% of people use WorldPay for the payment, the remainder either PayPal, or another payment that they can select from.

Thanks gsx,

Which is better for releasing funds to you?

I have more or less the same stats as gsx. If for some reason I had to make a choice between WorldPay and PayPal it would have to be WorldPay. Ideally you want a range of payment options.

one factor you don't seem to have considered is the cards that can be accepted by paypal and worldpay - worldpay allows you to accept switch, delta, solo, and other uk debit cards, paypal doesn't. about half the payments through my account are from debit cards.

Thanks - that is a big factor to consider, I think it rules out PayPal for this venture.

Paypal announcement 1st Feb 03

"We know you've been waiting to use your Solo or Switch debit card with PayPal! Very soon, PayPal will launch this functionality to the community. PayPal sellers will be able to accept Solo and Switch debit cards, and buyers will be able to conveniently use their Solo or Switch debit cards to pay sellers within or outside the UK! Watch for more updates... "

Releasing funds? PayPal - you can be paid in 7 days, but this is done manually. Worldpay, SelectJunior (which lots of smaller sites use) takes 4 weeks and this is done automatically.

P.S. PayPal allows AMEX and Diners Club at no extra charge.

Worldpay is definitely the better option in our opinion. There are many non-internet savvy customers, neither conversant nor comfortable with systems such as Paypal and Nochex, but definitely do possess a payment card and are willing to use the same ...!

in your scenario WorldPay may be best, especially as they offer a Virtual Terminal service for Telephone orders.

Can I ask why you don't see Protx as an option?

I have looked into payment gateways for my new ecommerce site and have ended up thinking of Protx.

I'd like to know your reasons for eliminating Protx.

If you use a US mailing address in your PayPal business account you can get a PayPal MasterCard debit card that gives you instant access to your funds.

I was told there is no way of using Protx with a NatWest Merchant or ITA. If you want to know the reason, ring them. Lloyds, Barclays maybe, not an option for me at the moment.

PayPal isn't usable for most countries in the world - so you'll have less potential clients if you want to target the whole world.

Also, PayPal have closed accounts quite often for no good reason.

I had an account with them and because my country isn't an EU country
or USA (but it's still European), my account was just closed like that.

Many have found that PayPal makes charges to their credit cards and
lots of similar stuff.

So beware of PayPal. Read more about PayPal at
http://www.nopaypal.com (I have no connection with the site).

I have heard the PayPal horror stories but we have never had any problems with them at all and we receive payments from many different countries around the World. We have been allocated a PayPal account manager who we can email or phone with any queries and he usually returns emails within 10 minutes. I appreciate that some people have had problems with PayPal but no organisation can please all of the people all of the time, we have nothing but good to say about them.
