HI!

Can anybody tell me where who's got the cheapest digital certificates these days?

I went to order a Thawte certificate from my hosting company, and it was $310! They used to be $99! Also, I heard that since Dun & Bradstreet bought Thawte that you have to have a Duns Number to get a certificate. And a Duns Number is going to cost another $195!

I am in shock! Does anybody know of a cheaper alternative?

THANKS!

Personally, I think looking for the cheapest alternative is a recipe for disaster. You will get what you pay for. Oh, it may not bite you now or ever - but if it does bite you, it is guarenteed to be a nasty one.

I humbly suggest you stick with names you know and trust (despite the cost) - or more importantly, that your customer's know and trust. Customers are getting smarter everyday. It will soon become a common theme for them to research SSL Certificates at the stores they shop. And I can guarantee you that an SSL backed by Thawte, Verisign, or another easily recognized and trusted name will win hands down over one offered by an unproven SSL issuer. Especially if they're known for bottom shelf prices.

But, that's just my 2 cents.

BTW - I just checked Thawte, their SSLs are selling for $199.

GeoTrust is the cheapest of the well-known issuers at $119.00.

The cheapest I've found are through instantssl and comodo.

You can get ssl for 49 bucks, and the certificate to go with it for 69 bucks.

I totally agree with lorax, you get what you paid for, but this is the cheapest I've seen.

Good luck.

Rackshack.net has Geotrust certs for $49; I've installed several and had no difficulties thus far.

The company we use occasionally for external SSL provision had much the same reaction, and swapped away from Thawte to a cheaper provider. There were some problems though, and in the end they ended up going back to Thawte.

It seems to one of those things where you need to balance the risks of something going wrong against the lower cost. It depends how vital the certificate is to your specific operation, and what a day of down-time would cost you. And possibly also whether you feel lucky :)

I dont have anything else to add really, just to say that I agree with lorax, go with a trusted name on something as important as SSL certificates.
