There are so many scams and emarketing is all a blur to me. What is a legitimate plan for a small website with very limited budget to grow?
I have picked up a couple of books in the past but by the time they hit print they seem outdated.
I need some advice about where to focus my attention and in what priority... I can only fund advertising sporadically depending on sales and in quite small amounts.
Articles, yes? no? waste of time? Search engines? PPC? Not a lot of breaking news around my specific products. I hate spam mail... and I courtiously contact my customers regularly.
You're in a tough spot. On the one hand you need exposure to qualified buyers who will come and spend money. On the other, it sounds like you don't have the budget to hire someone to analyze your market space and build a plan for you. SO ... you'll need to do this yourself.
How? You will find a lot of reading material here. I'd suggest you read up on SEO and make sure your website has the best chance of being indexed using whitehat SEO. Write good product and category descriptions and make sure your code is clean and your pages load fast. Check to be sure you've got a robots.txt and that you have no broken links or missing resources (images, css files, etc).
Once you've taken the time to make sure you've done your due diligence then you should spend some time reading the many threads here on SEM and offsite marketing techniques. You will find a ton of helpful information. Read and try some of the ideas. Always have a way to measure your success though. You can't dabble in SEO/SEM without a proper way to measure your efforts otherwise you're just wasting your time.
