I assume that this is the right place to be asking about configuring OScommerce...

Does anyone have any advice on how to secure the administrative area? I was thinking of using an .htaccess file but there is already one in there, do i risk messing it up?

Also, am I right in assuming that all you have to do is enable the paypal module and enter the user's pay-pal email (that is associated with the account) and then the user can start recieving payments through the oscommerce sales?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

If you are using C-Panel or such, you can easily password protect the admin area from there. Just use the C Panel button to password protect the directory, and it will modify the .htaccess file for you, not much risk of any problems.

In my experience with e-commerce (I have about 25 different stores online), Paypal is not a good payment solution. When I've used it, my sales have decreased.

Good luck!

Well, the forums at oscommerce would probably be better. But as mentioned above, password protect your admin directory or find a suitable contribution from oscommerce.com/community/contributions
