Countries that require "State" in billing info

Anyone know which countries use "State" which dont?

Most of my customers are from the US and so therefore I've made the "State" field required on my payment page.

HOWEVER - i've noticed a lot of Non-US orders where the State field causes a problem....and others where it is used just like a US order.

Does anyone have a list of countries and which use "States" and which dont? (for a shipping address...for a billing address).

I just notice my cart software allows me to pre-choose which countries have the state field required...i just dont know which do!

If your cart software offers that - it then should have the list I would think.

I put together a spreadsheet a few years ago similar to what you are asking after I just searched thru a few different websites.

I take it there is not a way to just disable it as well if they are not in the United States?

We used a catch-all "Not Applicable" option in the state field, just for this particular purpose!

We ship throughout the European Union. No "State" field required anywhere.
