Fraud Reporting and IP Address Tracking

Can I track an IP Address

I've recently been bombarded by an individual basically "dialing for dollars". "He" seems to have an endless supply of credit cards, some of which are valid with CVVs, etc. I have "his" IP Address. 2 questions:

1. Is there any way to track this person?
2. Is there anywhere useful to report this to?

If you have a merchant account with a back-end website, you can probably add that IP address to an IP black-list to decline all orders from that IP

In a word, no.

I spent a whole lot of time trying to get credit card companies interested in reporting fraud. This forum is full of members who met with stunned silence, voice mail and unreturned calls from credit card companies.

I could spend all day harvesting and reported compromised credit card numbers, but nobody cares. That is why the second post told you to just block the idiot with the stolen card numbers.

You need to start matching info on your orders. I'm assuming you already use AVS for billing address. Try getting phone number information on your orders. You can usually match a phone number to a name and address using a service like Mellissa data or just searching Google. You can also match an IP address of the customer to a city location which should match the billing address etc. Sometimes preventing fraud is just a matter of making it more difficult for the fraudsters, when it becomes to time consuming maybe they will leave you alone and go elsewhere.

We collect phone/address info and billing address is verified, but we really don't have the time to check phone numbers for every order. I guess we'll have to set up a protocol to check all orders shipped to addresses other than the billing. I just wish I could track this guy down.

You could send the information to the US Treasury Dept. Last I heard, they are in charge of investigating wire fraud, which is what this is. I think they even have a special page for reporting this stuff. But if he is outside of ths US, no good. And I am not so sure it is ever a good thing to be noticed by them, even to report things like this.

What I did with someone who was doing this to me was pay the extra money for the Fraud Suite from Authorizenet, which allowed me to block his ip address. It was worth the extra money just to stop him. Can you believe it--the guy actually emailed me after that saying he couldn't complete a transaction on my site. Waaaah!
