Can a canadian based ecommerce store compete with US sites?

I'm assuming a large % of sales would be in the US, with the added delay and cost for shipping and potential duty/brokerage fees of probably around 8-12%...it just about cuts a huge chunk of profits.

is anyone doing this successfully, do I have my numbers all wrong?

We do it successfully all day long.

Take a look at section 321 of the free trade aggreement and see if it applies to your products.

Otherwise, sticky me and I might be able to help you get your products to the states.

About 80% of all our sales go to the US, even though some of the items we sell are quite competitive.

We don't even try to compete on price. Instead we focus on providing lots of pre-sales information, very fast response to inquiries and lots of shipping options with free shipping for larger orders.

Been making a very good living now for over two years. Even with the rising dollar.
