Prepaid Return Labels?

Is anyone printing and using these?

We'd like to offer customers free return shipping to encourage exchanges rather than returns.

To do that, we'd need to put a prepaid postage label in each package that we ship. If the customer chose to exchange merchandise, we'd pay the postage. If they chose to return, we'd deduct some shipping fee from their refund.

The labels are easy to print in Endicia, but if I were to go that route, it looks like I'd have to pay for them whether I used them or not. Is there an alternative where I only get charged if the label gets used? Even more helpful would be if it worked with Endicia.

Endicia requires that you pre-pay for your return labels whether they are used or not. I've tried printing returns labels to a PDF Printer but its kind of a pain since you have to change the printer back afterwards.

Personally, I find UPS WorldShip has an easier interface for return labels. You key in your customer's address and select "Returns" (underneath the QuantumViewNotify radio button). Select "Electronic Return Label" and customer's e-mail. If your customer has a printer, s/he can print out the label and drop it off at any UPS Store. In your e-mail, give them a list of nearby stores. I imagine FedEx software has a similar return label feature.

The USPS has a shipping label API that allows you to create merchandise return labels that can be generated for each order or emailed after the fact.

You can get details here [usps.com].

We use Fedex Ship Manager. You get the samething as the UPS software, but you skip the dirt and box damage that you get with UPS.
