Where can I find a list of the oldest and still alive ecommerece web sites? Looking for an early leader of ecommerce rather then a specific industry.
Thanks

What exactly do you consider to be "ecommerce"? Any kind of paid for service/product over the web? Or only tangible stuff?
If services are ok, then it'd be some adult site most likely :)

Internet Ecommerce was first legalize in March 1991. Browsers did not exist until 1993. It wasn't until 1994 that technology was invented to take credit cards over the internet. I belive the first Internet business that still exists started taking credit cards in the fall of 2004. However I belive they were an ISP, not selling tangible goods.
Update. August 11, 1994. The company was called Netmarket.
I worked for a California ISP in 1994 - 95 and we were putting stores on the net back then. Even before I worked for them I was researching the audiobook business in 1993 and there was a company who set up gopher/lynx pages for something like $400/mo. Credit cards were taken and ran through traditional terminals but it worked fine - Teleflora was one of the big credit card providers then for net merchants from what I remember.
