For someone with a reasonable knowledge of HTML and CSS but no ecommerce experience how long do you think it would take for them to install something like ZenCart or OSCommerce into a new website?

It really depends on the level of customization needed. Right out of the box, the installation is pretty easy. Customization will very heavily. It can take me a week to 2 weeks to get an oscommerce store to look and act the way I want it to.

For someone with no PHP experience and has never built an ecomm catalog and cart - I'd say count on a couple of months learning curve. The first few weeks will be spent just getting oriented and familiar with the programming language let alone the structure of the package you go with.

All of this is predicated on you doing customization. Simple plug in modules and changing CSS and tweaking images shouldn't take you all that long - I'd guesstimate you'll spend 3-4 weeks -- but of course that's without knowing what your skill set truly is.

If you use a site-builder system that includes a shopping cart then you can do it with little tech. knowledge in a matter of hours/days. Don't reinvent the wheel :)
