Trying to implement the standard account optional feature for an international customer, but it seems unavailable. So no more direct payment options (without customer signing up) for non-us users? Anybody know anything about this new non-feature? Seems we're going in the wrong direction...

When you say international customer, is that your customer? Do you have your paypal account set up properly?

Or do you mean another merchant? If so, what country is he in?

Yes, he should be specific.

My client is in the East. They have opened a standard Paypal business account. Non-US.
I am trying to integrate their website with their paypal account. The Account Optional feature should take the buyer to a paypal payment page that does not require the buyer to sign up for a paypal account. This according to Paypal.

However, the code generated by paypal for setting up the buy now button takes the buyer to a page that requires the creation of a password, with a heading stating that they are opening a paypal account.

The Account Optional feature is activated in the Profile section.

The optional Paypal account is only available in the following countries:
  • Australia
  • Belgium
  • Canada
  • France
  • Hong Kong
  • Netherlands
  • United Kingdom
  • United States

If he in is not in one of those countries, it is not being offered at this time.

Account Optional should be available to merchants in most PayPal-supported countries except Germany, China, and countries where PayPal does not allow accounts to receive payments. However, some account types or transactions might not have Account Optional available.

To determine whether Account Optional is available for a particular payment, click on the payment button and observe the first page of PayPal checkout:

If it displays credit card logos on the left side of the page and a login option on the right side, then Account Optional is enabled.

If it displays the text "Sign up today", then Account Optional is not available.

If it displays a login screen, click on the "click here" button for users without accounts. If that takes you to the "Sign up today" page, then Account Optional is not available. Otherwise, it will take you directly to the Shipping or Billing page of the Account Optional checkout.

I've never been able to pay on anything PayPal. Neither account optional works, nor will it let me create an account, and I'm a german national living in an EU country. If you ask me that's just unacceptable, and I'm not impressed with PayPal's business practices...

Ok. So it depends from where the buyer is. Thanks

Update: Appearantly I can now create both an eBay account as well as a PauyPal account from my country, but it still doesn't accept credit cards or bank accounts from here. That's just plain stupid!

Why can't Germans open a paypal account.?

Is it because of the 'German Only' Credit cards that they use (ELV or something and another one), that puts paypal off?

No, not germans, It's the country of residence that's the problem. What I was trying to say is that it's rediculous and slightly insulting to say that it's fraud protection and the like to exclude so many countries.
