Hi,

We are a young software company that is about to start commercializing a software product. Our product a 100% web based aplication similar to a business intelligence solution aimed at medium size companies. Our target public is mainly IT services and software development organizations.

We are planning on selling the product online from our company website. Our question is, what is the best method/service to handle payment (eg Paypal)? We need to accept payments from as many countries as possible.

Our main concern is to get it working as fast as possible. We are not so bothered about the size of commission fees as much as we are about being able to terminate the service at any time without incurring in major cost. (ie, no long term contract, minimum set up costs, etc...)

We are evaluating e-commerce solutions (as paypal) with the following characteristics:

- Our clients can be of any country in the world, so payments from any country should be accepted.

- It sould be quick an easy to implement. We need to have it on production asap.

- We do not want to be tied to the service provider. We do not want to pay a quote, we do not want a year contract, cancelation fees, etc... We want to be able to easily change provider if we are not happy.

- The less cost the better, although it is more important to be quickly implemented and not to be tied to the provider.

Aside from finding the right service, are there any other considerations that are relevant to our situation regarding online payment we are forgetting?

Thank you

fran

It depends on what country you are in & if you are lookig for a 3PP (like 2CO or Paypal)?

Paypal is supported by about 45 countries. 2CO is supported everywhere but they (like all 3PP) retain the right to reject the transaction becuase it is their merchant account you are using.

You say you do not want contacts? Are you not planning on being in business that long? A contract can be good on some aspects, i.e. when Visa raises the rates in April, you are still guaranteed that same discount rate until your contract expires. As far as being unhappy - you have to remember, as long as you abide by the contract - the MAP (merchant account provider) will.

If you are setting up a PayPal account for this, make sure it is a Business account - this will give you access to all of the Merchant Tools and Business Account features that are not available to Personal or Premier accounts.

You will probably want to get Verified immediately - this allows you to withdraw your funds more quickly once you do start receiving payments if you get your bank linked up now. Also, once you have had your account for more than 60 days (I think it's 60) you can request a Debit Card for even faster access to your funds. (Plus, you get 1% cashback on Debit Card purchases processed as Mastercard credit card transactions.)

When sending your customers to PayPal, be sure to let them know up front that they will be transferred to the PayPal site and that they do *not* need to create an account to pay (assuming you are not using PayPal Subscriptions).

Doesn't look like the PayPal Debit Card is available outside the US right now:

*This is a U.S. Premier and Business Account feature.

I've just had a nightmare trying to pay with PayPal. Took several days to get an account opened and I still can't make a payment. I gave up and bought from another site.
