Hi everyone!
I'm new to this and would like to hear some advice from you great people.

I am planning to put up an ecommerce site. I live in Hong Kong and thinking of getting my products from China and sell it to the world. I really don't know where to start,
should I go there first and look for products that I can sell or search around on the net and see what are hot and get those product from china?

Thanks a lot

Hot products found in the Net mean also hot competition.

I'd go to China and find niche products:
1. Something that does not cost too much (or people will hesitate to buy them thrugh Internet), say up to $100
2. Something, that does not weight too much (avoid big shipping charges)
3. Preferable something, that can be bought without prior touching, smelling, sitting on (i.e. fragrancies are bad, computers are good in this mean).

Then search in the Net for shops selling product you had found, and "if you get less than 500,000 competitors, it's good" -- (c) an experienced guy from webmasterworld.com

Thank you Morgenhund. Do you think I can make money with electronics? I know electronics in China are super cheap, just have to find a manufacturer/supplier. I'm also a bit concern about the cost of shipping, if I sell say to the U.S., the cost of shipping could offset my profit margin.

It is really hard to say. I can suggest you to make a research -- look for possible competitors in the Net, compare existing prices in brick-and-mortar stores, write a basic business plan.

Hi greatpretender,

I guess it might be interesting to do a search on ebay for what products go out from china. I have friends in Brazil who buy weight-gainer products via ebay and they get it shipped from China. It's still cheaper than buying it locally. (this baffles me)

Ebay might also be a good place to start for, because you can set up a "shop" with hardly any start up costs. Get an ebook on it and consider buying someone else's ebay account so you have alot of good credits to start with.

Just an idea.
