I own a online store...someone placed 2 orders under the same account/name. both orders were for different items, and they used 2 cards for the orders, visa on one and MC on other. They also used different shipping address. IP matched the vicinity of the user. I called this person to verify-of course they said "its me..." and she said it was her home addy but her college addy I was to send product to. I went ahead and shipped-she used a discount code I have floating around the web for 20% off too.

Oh, she told me she used 2 cards because she was maxed out on one...I didnt ask-she just told me.

I could get screwed on this, but didnt want to piss off a customer even though I am in the right to be worried. What can I do if there is a next time.

Is there a proper line of ethics on questioning for ecommerece, like can I say "why use 2 cards" etc.... and what would you do in this situation.

I would have called her credit card carrier to verify both addresses. If the ship to address didn't verify, I would have sugested she add that as an alternative shipping address with her credit card carrier before I shipped to her.

Of course, it could all be ok, but I never ship to an address if it isn't verified by the cc carrier.

forgot that part...I called CC carrier, they verified the name, addy and phone.
My fear was a kid using parents card, or a nanny, or something.

We often ship to different addresses from the billing address.

If we suspect fraud, we always call the customer. We have certain products that throw up "red flags" for us in addition to Next Day Air on high dollar items.

As long as they can produce the correct billing address and CVV and we can get them on the phone, we ship.

Occassionaly, some fraud orders get through, but it is the cost of doing business for us.
