Choosing hosting & shopping cart for UK site

Hello I'm new to this forum, I've been reading around this section for a couple of weeks and this is my first post.

I'm currently looking into shopping carts & UK hosting for an ecommerce site.

Could anyone offer me advice on how to pick which hosting company to go with? I've read that people are reluctant to offer a recommendation, but are there any unbiased review sites out there that others have found useful? I really just need a starting point.

I'm leaning towards X-cart, does anyone have any other suggestions for SE friendly shopping carts? Or any other comments on this choice.
