How far back can a chargeback be requested?

How far back can Visa/Mastercard go for a chargeback?

Ok I'm a little miffed. I just received a chargeback notice on a charge that we processed on August 20, 2004, basically 5-1/2 months ago. Of course naturally I'll lose like you do in almost any of these situations, but I thought that there was some kind of limit on how far back they could go in the USA.

Isn't 5-1/2 months a little far back?

I believe a chargeback limitation is 6 months, they just got in under the wire.

Last I checked the time limit is 6 months in the US to issue a charge back.
The CC companies recommend you keep your charge records that far back so that you have some proof.

It depends on the issuing bank. The average is six months for Visa and MasterCard.

I have had clients call me because American Express has issued chargebacks as 18 months. And I have seen some issuing banks for Visa and MasterCard as little two months.

For the 5 1/2 months, sounds like someone might even have the system down pretty good
