This might be a silly question but can someone tell me when to distribute an invoice and when to distribute a Purchase Order?

an invoice is basically a bill for your goods or services that you would send to a client.
the purchase order is an order for goods or services that you want from a business.

Invoices go to customers; purchase orders go to your suppliers.

so if a customer buys wholesale...and pays by credit card...what paperwork should be included in the shipment?

An invoice ... and perhaps a copy of his purchase order if they sent you one. Most people just reference the purchase order number on the invoice so the client knows which purchase order covers the invoice.

so in essence...this invoice (in this case) would serve as the receipt it seems. Thanks.

In th eUK if an invoice is over £50 then it must have a unique id number, if it doesnt you dont have to pay it.
