How Many Links?

Do I need to go from PR 4 to PR 5?

My site is currently at PR4, and we have perhaps 50 links pointing to us. Here are my questions:

1. Any idea how many related links we need to get to PR5?
2. Should the links that point to us have a certain page rank or will any related link do?

Thanks in advance from a newbie,

Chil

You do understand that the PR google shows you may not be accurate. They have been serving up mis-information to combat SEO.

It's hard to say. It could be one, it could be a 1000. The higher the PR of the sites linking to you, the better. The fewer the links on the pages pointing to you, the better.

And so if you have a PR10 with no other links point to you, you will go up to PR5 ... and possibly to PR8 or even PR9 (this won't happen, so stop dreaming ...). But it might take 1000 PR1 pages which have hundreds of other links on the page to bump your rating.

how exactly can I work out the PR of my website? I here about it a lot, but never know.

Is it just Google that does this?

chodges84,

you can't calculate PR. there's a basic published formula but there are unknowns, most notably the how the actual PR is translated (through some logarithmic function) into the 0 to 10 scale you see in the google toolbar.

if you mean how do you see the PR that google calculated, download the toolbar.

ah right. Cheers.

I'll go and download the toolbar now.

Thanks for the replies. It seems like a big unknown. I'll go about adding popular related links with good PR and see how long (and how many more links) it will take to move up.

Welcome to WebmasterWorld Chili,
The formula is a moving target. The best you can hope for is to follow through on the basics. Assuming you have a good indexable site structure, add good content and then get yourself some good links. Stir and repeat. It's not rocket science but it does take time. ;)

Thanks, Lorax. I've already benefited from becoming a member and appreciate the encouragement. Hopefully, I'll be able to make a contribution to others down the road.

If you hang out with this crowd long enough, you'll be paying for it (and benefiting from it) in ways you never imagined.

Check out a page rank prediction tool which gives the percent of increase in G. backlinks (this is not accurate prediction but interesting nevertheless). The recent increase in backlinks since last increase in rank could be a determining factor --but keep in mind which backlinks google counts also, i.e., possibly only those that produce PR.

Thanks. Where do I find a "page rank prediction tool"?
