I'm really confused about Alexa rankings. I've watched our Alexa rating go down to half of what it was a few months ago....but we don't get more traffic then we did a few months ago. I don't get it. What exactly do these rankings mean?

Ignore the alexa rankings, they only use the data they obtain from their toolbar. So it is easy to game if you install it on every desktop at even a medium size business.

I would not necessarily ignore. What I would do is interpret very cautiously. Realize that you are dealing with statistics of relatively small numbers and a skewed sample of folks who use these toolbars. Also realize that the Alexa ranking can badly manipulated.

But YOUR ranking if you don't play those games might be somewhat more instructive ... as a rough measure.

With that said, I don't know how to explain your particular situation.

From the horses mouth [pages.alexa.com]. There's also a link on that page for a more detailed explanation.
