Well a T1 would be a good thing if you were hosting the website. Are you? And are we talking ecommerce website, directory site, brochure website, or?

But if you're asking about a connection to use for building the website - a T1 would be GREAT but it's not necessary. You could get by on a dialup connection if you had to.

The only good reason I can think of to bring a site in house is if you're maintaining sensitive data that should not go outside your network. Even then, you have to deal with firewalls, routing, etc.

Just set up an account with a hosting company and get your site launched. Once you see how much traffic you have, and how it interacts with other systems(ie, database servers, etc), then you can decide if it's worth bringing in house.

I would suggest given your post (don't take this the wrong way) that with a budget of $200 a month you would be far better off outsourcing your hosting to a dedicated hosting company with 24 hour support and maintenance.

Hosting yourself takes expertise and specialist knowledge, especially with eCommerce.

Thanks GURU guys, that's a B2B commercial site. TByte level large database and most content change everyday, not suitable for host somewhere. I have router swith firewall and I can play with them. Still want to know if there is any cheap connection instead of T1?

Ok, so we're talking hosting. So this site is or isn't online at this time?

If it is, check your server logs and see what the bandwidth consumption is. That'll give you an idea of what you'll need. You should be able to get a fractional T but they aren't much cheaper as I recall.

Re: tbytes - Terrabytes? What are you pushing? Pictures?

Thanks. The site has not been set up yet but I have one set up for 4 years already and make more than 1 million for my somebody else and now I want to start up myself. The one set up already has more than 150000 unique users per month. More than 100 millions of products and their related information. Everyday there are about 1Gb need to be downloaded from other sites.

I don't know where you are located, but some parts of the world, fiber optic and DSL are also options. In the USA, DSL runs about $300 USD per month for T1 type service. If you are close to the central office, you can pay for faster service.

You can save a little by going to a fractional T1.

The difference in price between a T1 and DSL is what kind of technical and timely response you will get if your connection goes down. With T1, you are paying for better service. With DSL, it will work most of the time, but if it goes down - don't expect the same service as T1.

I have been researching T1 providers for 2 days now because good DSL is not available (only slow IDSL) is available in my area. I had a hard decision to make after comparing a bunch of providers - I chose megapath - almost chose mpower - both companies have excellent deals - I am paying $279 (free install and router after rebate) to megapath for 384K - if I want to upgrade later the cost is $379 for 768K. $479 for T1 with one year contract. Mpower has a very cool deal where you can get both voice and data over same T1 but for my own reasons I chose Megapath. I researched the reviews of both and most were good.

Of course it's allowed :-) I would not recommend it - I say get a hosting provider like rackspace or the hundreds of other companies that provide hosting. Cheaper and more effective.
